Bing Search Engine Optimization

If you follow search engine marketing then no doubt you’ve been hearing about Microsoft’s latest search engine release called Bing.  Bing promises a new user experience for those surfing the web.  This is a pretty necessary rework of Microsoft’s previous search in an effort to compete with both Google and Yahoo.  There appears to be more press than ever covering this launch as Microsoft is seeking to make radical changes to their business model.

I seem to be getting a large number of blog readers asking about Bing and what they should be doing to get sites ranked well on this new search engine.  This is a common question whenever new search engines hit the scene or major updates are announced to a search engine’s algorithm.  The good news here is that Bing appears to follow many of the same protocols as Google, the world’s leading search engine.

A common method of evaluating how search engine algorithms work is to do an in depth analysis of top performing sites for given keywords.  This allows you to evaluate commonalities and also differences that may account for differences in ranking.  Based on my own side by side comparisons and additional in depth research among others in the search engine optimization community, it’s pretty evident that web site age, in bound links, and other criteria are important to the Bing search algorithm.

It appears as though Microsoft’s Bing search engine is using many of the same ranking factors as other popular search engines.  This is good news simply because optimization of web sites take time and trying to optimize for one search engine over another may provide very mixed results.  Bing likes in bound links and that is pretty consistent regardless of which search engine you are trying to improve your organic results for.

By know you know the importance of improving your web site’s organic search results.  This creates more awareness, traffic, and positive results.  Perhaps you know about the importance of organic rankings but don’t have the resources to move your site towards the top of the search results.  Don’t worry, begin small and focus on building links to your site.  Once you do, you can see positive improvements in your rankings on Bing and other search results.

The other place you want to focus is content.  Quality content is vital.  But trying to attract users with quality content alone is not enough to rank on top for competitive keywords.  Make it easy for others to link to your content and give them a reason to do so.  Add time to your daily efforts to acquire links from relevant and authoritative sites to increase your rankings and keep you on top of search engine results.

Optimizing your website requires a good deal of attention to search engine optimization basics.  By focusing on what you can control, creating engaging content and producing a website that is easily crawled by search engines, you go a long way in developing a Bing friendly site.  In addition, you move closer towards improving your rankings for all major search engines.
